MUUSAN Network meets Saturday, January 12, 2019
10:00-12:00, UU Community Church of Augusta
(69 Winthrop Street, Augusta 04330)
129th Legislature, First Session,
and a New Governor!
10:00-12:00, UU Community Church of Augusta
(69 Winthrop Street, Augusta 04330)
129th Legislature, First Session,
and a New Governor!
The legislative climate for MUUSAN's advocacy work has dramatically changed as a result of the November election, with a Democratic Governor and solid Democratic majorities in both houses of the legislature. We can assume that many bills we have supported which have been stymied or vetoed in the past can make headway now.
This is a tremendously exciting time for Maine's Unitarian Universalists to push forward on our values in protecting democracy, achieving health care for all, mitigating climate change, and pressing for racial, Native and immigrant justice in the State House.
Rep. Pinny Beebe-Center (D-Rockland) will join us to help lay out the new climate and help us understand the kinds of enhanced opportunities that will be available to us and some ways that we can make best use of those opportunities.
PLUS ROLLOUT OF MUUSAN's FABULOUS NEW
IMMIGRANT JUSTICE TOOLKIT!
Our Racial, Native and Immigrant Justice Issue Group has worked very hard from July through January to come up with this compilation of eleven tools for congregational use in supporting immigrant justice in Maine and how to use them.
Be there to get your own copy of this practical, tailored resource and hear the authors explain how to use it.
This is continuing follow-up work to our August SanctUUary Summit and outstanding November guest speakers from the UU Church of Brunswick and First Parish Portland UU.
ALSO, ISSUE GROUPS (Democracy in Action, Health Care for All, Climate Change, and Racial, Native and Immigrant Justice) will meet for at least an hour to discuss goals and plans for the legislative session now underway.
Please join us to bring the good word back to your congregation and help mobilize UUs statewide for legislative action on our targeted bills as they become identified!
Week 1 of Mills Administration: 529 Mainers deemed eligible under Medicaid expansion provisions can NOW see a doctor and receive care paid for by Medicaid! The start of tens of thousands of Mainers who need and will receive care! Hurray!

Tom Andrews serves as UUSC President and CEO. An extraordinary social change strategist who brings passion, savvy, and decades of experience, Andrews is committed to challenging the devastating impacts of global warming, the injustice of growing income equality, and the assaults on the rights and dignity of marginalized people throughout the world.
Andrews previously served as president and chief executive officer of United to End Genocide since 2011, and has led the national Win Without War coalition since 2002. National Popular Vote Compact Information Session
with Doug Rooks and David Ezhaya. Bring a brown bag lunch.
PRESENTERS
Seasoned journalist Doug Rooks has covered the State House for 32 years. His first book, the political biography “Statesman: George Mitchell and the Art of the Possible,” was published last year. Doug is a freelance editor, writer and author who specializes in environmental issues, public education, municipal affairs, business and tax policy.
Political analyst David Ezhaya is a retired Bonny Eagle HS teacher (40 years of service). David has served as Maine State Director for "We the People," as faculty advisor for Amnesty International, and as Mock Trial coach. He also works as a motivational speaker and group facilitator.
From Wikipedia: "The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an agreement among a group of U.S. states and the District of Columbia
to award all their respective electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The compact is designed to ensure that the candidate who wins the most popular votes is elected President. ...Because of current state laws, presidential candidates have lost the popular vote nationally but still won the presidency. Public opinion surveys suggest that a majority of Americans support the
idea of a popular vote for President. A 2007 poll found that 72% favored replacing the Electoral College with a direct election, including 78% of
Democrats, 60% of Republicans, and 73% of independent voters."
The National Popular Vote bill passed the Maine Senate in 2008. It has been enacted into law in some states. See its progress here.
